“If you want to run your life and your business with “purpose” instead of letting them run you, follow Ron’s 9 principles. You’ll achieve the results you dreamed of, and be glad you read this book.”

Anita Campbell, Editor in chief, SmallBizTrends.com

“Finally, a book that lays out a simple path to success. Its nine principles will change the lives of people who use them. Positive results come from doing something, learning from the outcome, making any necessary changes and doing it again. If you are not reaching your goals, or simply want more out of life, then this book is a must read; it’s the result of studying over 500 successful business owners. These principles work!”

Dr. Tony Alessandra, Author of The Platinum Rule and The NEW Art of Managing People

“In this age of global change, people and world markets are moving increasingly toward one another. Making our mark in this new environment requires us to accept new approaches, to take calculated risks and to adopt new expectations. Indeed, learning is a continuous process, and as Ron Finklestein points out, we must persistently explore opportunities that are congruent with these new realities. Perhaps we can think of it as a kind of selfish altruism - our personal recognition that in helping others, we make everything better for everyone, including ourselves.“

Dr. Luis M. Proenza, President, The University of Akron

“Amazing! This book is the result of studying over 500 successful business owners. It’s amazing how they all exhibit the same behaviors. Best of all, this book documents these behaviors in nine principles you can use to super-charge your business and your life!”

After years of reading about a variety of self-improvement and personal growth topics, from a variety of authors, I came to an amazing realization: I was not achieving my goals because I was not taking the necessary action. I did not know how to harness my limited time, energy and resources to move forward towards my selfishness (intelligent self-interest).

How could I identify my intelligent self-interest, determine the actions I needed to take, and then take action?

I co-founded a business conference that afforded me the privilege of working with some very successful people. The purpose of the conference was to identify what business owners did to be successful and to have these successful business owners share their best practices with the conference attendees. As I worked on this conference, I was fortunate enough to read nominations from hundreds of businesspeople who applied for this opportunity.

Over the years I started seeing a trend. This trend showed me that all successful people who applied performed the same nine actions. I think of them as principles for a personal and business success.

Three of these nine principles are:

1. Intelligent self-interest

2. Ownership

3. Measuring Results

As I identified and distilled these principles into their current form, I felt the need to use these principles in my own life and with my clients. The results were incredible. My clients got clear on what was important to them (intelligent self-interest) and how the business they were building would help them create their ideal life. In one case a business owner realized he did not like being a business owner with employees. As he explored his intelligent self-interest he realized he liked consulting and creating new products. He sold his business and started a new consulting firm that allowed him to follow his intelligent self-interest. In my own business I focused my entire business on teaching, coaching and implementing these principles.

Why are these principles so important? Einstein said, “We cannot solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” As a result, many of the challenges we experience can be remedied by changing our thinking. Once we change our thinking we can see things differently. Once we see things differently, we can determine a course of action that may not have been available to us before.

Let us look at some concepts that will help you to think differently

Let’s focus on the first problem: our beliefs. I have found that our belief system is the biggest obstacle holding us back. Our beliefs are our evaluation of something. Frequently when we re-evaluate a situation, our belief about that situation will change. If your beliefs are holding you back, you must change them.

Many times our success is hindered not because we don’t know what to do but by behaviors that sabotage our success. As children we grew up with beliefs that we freely accepted. These beliefs came from our parents, clergy, teachers and other important people in our lives at the time. We watched how they behaved and saw the results they achieved (or not), and somewhere along the way we thought emulating those behaviors was in our best interest. Many of us made decisions as children, based on our limited experience that we still hold today. Why is that a problem? Because most of us do not know what we believe, and we have accepted beliefs that may not be in our best interest.
