Visual design is the body language of written communication. What's yours saying?

People decide whether to hang around on your site within a few seconds of arriving, and it's the visuals that make the most immediate impression.

Are you authentic? Does it 'feel' right? Will reading your site be a pleasant experience or a struggle?

If your site isn't drawing visitors in, or you feel it's not the online home you wanted but aren't sure why, maybe the design is giving out the wrong messages.

What you'll learn

This course takes you through three topics: colour, fonts and layout

It'll help you develop a better 'eye' for design and an understanding of what makes things work well or badly. It'll also help you choose design elements that'll work for you.

Who it's aimed at

This course is for people who haven't dabbled much with design but want to use their website (and other resources) to get a message across.

You want to learn just enough to make the right choices, and you need it presented clearly.

Maybe you're working with a web designer and want a more informed perspective so you can be clear what you're trying to achieve and get the best out of the relationship. Maybe you're working on a site yourself. Maybe you're trying to pick a WordPress theme but you don't know how to choose between them.

What you get

This is an e-course in PDF format, written in plain English with a dash of humour.

  • Workbook - the main part of the course, which you can print off to fill in the exercises if you want. (32 pages)
  • Resource book - the 'infodump' sections have been separated out here so you don't need to print it if you'd rather just read on screen. (25 pages)
  • Background message finder - this worksheet is used at the start to help you find the impressions you want to project with your design elements. (3 pages)
