James Gurney paints three dinosaur images while demonstrating his oil painting techniques. In this edition, narrations and voiceover are removed so that you can enjoy the pure, wordless engagement with the creation of three oil paintings of Tyrannosaurus rex. You'll see and hear the brushstrokes from a "driver's seat perspective" as Gurney develops each of the three images starting with the preliminary gouache studies created to plan the composition.

Throughout the presentation, Gurney pauses to demonstrate 11 methods of paint application. For these exercises, he uses black and white oil paint, which helps simplify and clarify each approach. Some are time-honored painting techniques, such as glazing, scumbling, and oiling up. Others are tips and tricks that Gurney has learned from almost 40 years of professional work, including pre-texturing, side-dragging, and palette-knife blending. Watching, listening, and learning these methods help you achieve a realistic paint surface, regardless of the subject matter you prefer to paint.
