Black & White Rag (George Botsford, U.S.)

0 ratings

There are many versions of this rag probably because it is so well suited to improvisation. It is often used as a show piece for fiddlers. So why not hammered dulcimer players?!

There is a lot of fun and challenging material in this tune. The main three features of rags are all here: (1.) syncopation; (2.) chromatics; and (3.) circle of fifths chord movement (with the V of the V of V!!!). If you don’t know what that means, it is time to find out. I present a variety of arranging ideas as well as an accompaniment. I explore all the elements of that which makes a rag a rag!!
