Location: Big Pothole Lake is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. When approaching the John Muir Trail from the eastern Sierra, a popular lateral is to start at Onion Valley (west of Independence, CA) and hike over Kearsarge Pass. This beautiful little lake is on the left hand side of the trail before you reach the pass.
