Aspern-Essling 1809 Battle Map

The Battle of Aspern-Essling was fought on May 21-22, 1809.  Sometimes described as the first modern battle of attrition, it saw Napoleon and his Grande Armée pinned against the banks of the Danube by a ferocious and well-planned Austrian assault.  A day of desperate fighting resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, as the two key villages switched hands time and again.  It was Napoleon's first tactical defeat.  Careful propaganda at home and the victory at Wagram a month later hid the scale and significance of the setback from the French public.  Nevertheless, Aspern-Essling marked a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars, signaling a shift from the rapid French victories of maneuver and surprise that marked La Gloire, to the bloody battles of attrition which were to come.  Aspern-Essling foreshadowed not only the bloodbaths of Wagram, Borodino, Leipzig, and Waterloo, but the worst fighting of the 20th Century as well.
