Experience the joy and well-being of coloring mandalas. This 11" x 8.5" Mandala Coloring Book contains 8 original eclectic asymmetry mandalas by Maureen Frank.

THE DESIGNS:

  • With "Circle Game" I took an abstract view of a carousel within a ball.
  • I created "Coastal" from a photo my husband took of the Oregon coast.
  • I wanted to create a fractal from scratch rather than use a computer to generate one; "Fractal" takes a simple idea of small circle with two lines projecting from the bottom of it, I added another small circle with two lines on top of the right line...I added another small circle with two lines under the left line...it continues inward and outward from there.
  • "Hornpipes" looks like a Dr. Seuss type of musical instrument, although we only see a portion of it.
  • With "In Stitches" I played with spirals as if stitched on a piece of quilting or embroidered tapestry.
  • For "Patches" I took the basic shape of a rounded corner rectangle then adjusted the sizes and angles giving the appearance that some of the squares are above or below other squares.
  • "Stars and Stripes" started as a large double spiral that felt like it needed stripes cutting cross-wise on the spiral; then of course the stars just begged to be added to the background.
  • I based "Tiger Eyes" on a microscopic image of some living things; I just took it to a more abstract level.

Happy Coloring!

THE PROCESS:

I create my own mandala designs by first hand sketching them with pencil and paper, then using a graphics tablet and stylus, I draw the mandala into the computer. From there I convert the digital images into a PDF coloring book.

MY STORY:

I began creating mandalas in early 1999 after a 10-day trip to Egypt. Through much of that region of the world patterns and symbols decorated just about every structure I visited, whether ancient, old or new. My analytical mind loved the geometry of the Islamic art and the Egyptian hieroglyphics. My heart and soul loved their elegant and symbolic beauty.

When I returned home, I began seeing patterns and symbols in everything around me, even in my dreams. I proceeded to translate these intriguing ideas into mandalas. In early 2000 I learned to use meditation as a way to access the depth of these mandalas, fully exploring their therapeutic and metaphysical natures.

In 2007, after 7 years of creating symmetry mandalas, I began creating asymmetrical mandalas, a more free-flowing style that allows for more flexibility for coloring and creativity.
