The How-To Course for Getting an Internship at Southwest Airlines

From the initial submission of your résumé (and the years of school that lead up to having a résumé worthy of your dream job) to stepping through the doors for your final in-person interview, I intend this course to give you the absolute best shot—the inside track, if you will—at landing an internship at Southwest Airlines.

Southwest receives upwards of 35,000 résumés (yup, you read that right!) for their summer internship program. Around 150 are selected, depending on Company bandwidth (and yup, at Southwest, we capitalize the word “Company”—along with People, Employees, Customers, and other important things).

That means you have approximately a .4% chance of being selected, all things considered even.

My hope is that this exhaustive guide will help that number skyrocket.

Because based on that figure, it’s harder to get into Southwest than it is to get into Harvard (5.6%). Than to become a Navy Seal (6%). You get the point. It’s not easy!

I got my first Southwest internship in 2016 through a mix of luck, determination, and obsession. I got my second Southwest internship in 2017 through a much better understanding of the process and connections in the Company. I got my full-time role through a mix of the above (but mostly, luck).

And now, I’m going to help you do the same. I’ll give you tips from former Interns, from the Hiring Manager point of view… I’ll even show you the résumé I submitted.

I can’t promise you’ll get the role—but I can promise you’ll be infinitely more prepared, confident, and ready to try.
