What is the 26S proteasome?
The 26S proteasome is the most important protease found in all three kingdoms of life (plants, bacteria and animal) – as one of the first inventions of evolution it is even found in archaea, the oldest known bacteria.
This protease is responsible for recognition of damaged proteins as well as for the permanent regulation of the (functional) cellular protein pool.
Dysfunction of the 26S proteasome is associated with a large variety of pathologies, ranging from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s to cancer and premature aging.
