Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXe PT879

The Soviet Union was caught unprepared for the start of hostilities during WW2. To help hold the line and to give Soviet industry a chance to catchup, British and American equipment flooded into the country under Lend-Lease.

As part of the British contribution, 1328 Spitfire Mk V and Mk IX’s were sent to Russia between 1943 and 1945. Of those 1328 all except one are marked as “fate unknown”, the sole exception is PT879. Assembled at the Castle Bromwich shadow factory, the aircraft was assembled in 1944, she was shipped to Russia arriving in Murmansk before joining 2nd Squadron, 767th Regiment, 122nd Division of the Russian Airforce. She crashed during a dogfight in 1945, with just 28.5 hours on the airframe.

By chance and fate, she would be discovered, retrieved from her resting place before being purchased and transported back to the UK. Following many years of efforts, in 2020 she was restored to flying condition and took to the skies once more thanks to the efforts of the Hangar 11 Collection team. This livery is based upon the markings carried by PT879 as she has been restored. She now operates out of Biggin Hill and can be found during air displays around the United Kingdom.
