Short Technical Study #15 (Major Scale Chromatic Harmonization using Secondary Dominants)

With the material presented in this series (Short Technical Studies) I seek to demonstrate some of the creative and fun ways in which I like to isolate and work on specific techniques on the guitar. Each study is designed with a unique concept and goal in mind and utilizes a variety of ways in which the technique can be used on the instrument.

In Study #15 I present to you two harmonic exercises that are designed to help us expand the chordal possibilities of any major key by using "secondary dominants" to harmonize the non-diatonic notes of the scale. We end up by having every single one of the twelve chromatic steps harmonized within the major scale's tonal center.

Exercise #1 presents a "Chromatic Descent" approach and Exercise #2 takes us in a "Chromatic Ascent" direction.
