This Max For Live instrument is an experimental little monophonic additive synth which uses ‘masking’ technique to produce sound: distributing up to 64 sine oscillators in a specific pitch range and in the stereo field. The mellow and evolving sounds, produced by Masquerade, are ideal for layering with other (more aggressive-sounding) synths. User can specify the number of oscillators, the way they are distributed in the pitch range and the overall pitch scaling. Traditional ADSR for further sculpting the sound and 13 slots for user-defined presets are available.

Usage: drop Masquerade onto any MIDI Ableton Live track and play your MIDI controller to produce the sound. Change ‘num’ dial to set the number of sine oscillators (2-64, default: 4). Use ‘curve’ dial to change how the oscillators are distributed across the centre pitch (0-2, default: 1). Values close to 1 are producing linear distribution. Values close to 0 or 2 are producing logarithmic distribution. You can monitor how the oscillators are distributed in the Masquerade OSC distribution monitor: the centre pitch is displayed as a line made of red dots. The oscillators are displayed as dark grey lines. You can scale the centre pitch up or down by using the ’scale’ dial (0-100, default 300). Use the traditional ADSR to further sculpting the sound. Attack, Decay and Release are time in ms (0-1000), Sustain is a level (0-1). Save up to 13 combinations of ‘num’, ’curve’, ‘scale’ and ADSR in the Presets section. Shift-click the slot to save a preset, click to restore the preset.
