This tutorial includes step by step instructions and photos on how to create your own needle felted Yeti relief portrait. Various techniques are used including folded flap techniques, creating wool eyes, sculpting facial features, sculpting and blending techniques as well as lacing the background to fit into a frame. After completing a Yeti partial relief face, the techniques will allow you to create other relief portraits in the same manner.
Supplies needed are:
10 x 12 inch (25 x 30 cm) completed background felt (or commercial felt)
2 ounces (56 grams) core wool
1 ounce (28 grams) outer wool in white or skin tones
Small pieces of colored wool for details
White or hair colored thick/thin yarn or other embellishments for hair
1 ounce (28 grams) curly locks in white or hair color
8 x 10 inch (20 x 25 cm) frame (shadow box frame recommended)
8 x 10 inch (20 x 25 cm) hard board panel
Straight pins
Sewing needle
Heavy thread such as button or upholstery thread
Felting Needles – 36 to 38 gauge triangular or star shaped needles, 40-42
gauge triangular needles
Foam Felting Pad
