This peaceful tune dates to the late 1700’s and possibly earlier. The longevity of the piece is a testament to its beauty. An excellent illustration of aeolian (Em), my goal in creating the backup and the arranging ideas was to avoid overwhelming the simplicity of the melody. Lessons covered include: developing a chord progression in the aeolian mode; playing with patience; arranging without overwhelming the melody; similarly, creating a backup without overwhelming the arrangement; and ultimately “What do YOU think about when you play music?” Stated differently, my goal is to get to a point of mastering a piece so that our primary focus is playing at an emotional level.
