Who is this Course for?

This Course is for silk artists painting on silk using steam-set silk dyes (dyes which absolutely require steaming).

  • Bamboo steamers are used on a stove top, and this technique is suitable for small pieces of silk, or a small scarf.

Large scarves and larger pieces of silk which need to be folded can end up with permanent creases, so this technique is not suitable for larger silk pieces.

We will evaluate the width of the silk and the width of the Bamboo Steamer

What is the Goal of this Course?

Our goal is to ensure that the hand-painted silk colours become bright and vibrant after steaming, as the steaming "sets" the colours which also become wash-fast and permanent.

Which silk dye is recommended?

I only use steam-set Silk Dyes from reputable brands.

Many of these are French brands, because I learned to paint on silk in Paris, France in the 1980s.

Doing research on silk dyes and which ones require steam-setting is a great place to start. To find out how reliable the steam-setting is, I do more research online and look for the brand name, the words "steam set" and "problem", or "disaster", to find out if anyone has written a negative review or comment online or in groups (on Facebook etc).

This helps narrow down the brands to use.

Is this steaming technique suitable for many yards or metres of silk?

No. This technique is suitable for steaming a few scarves and smaller items, depending on the size of the bamboo steamers.

For many yards or metres of silk, this small bamboo option is NOT recommended. Instead, I recommend using a horizontal stove-top steamer or a vertical steamer, both of which can hold many yards or metres of hand-painted silk.

PS - this is something to make you smile :-)

In the Course we'll be looking at :

  • the properties of two different types of silk
  • preparing the silk for steaming
  • setting up the steamer for maximum results
  • techniques for fitting the silk projects in the steamer
