Mandala Coloring eBook (Hyperbolic Tessellation): As One

I created the eight (8) original symmetry mandalas in this 11" x 8.5" PDF Mandala Coloring eBook with metaphysical-related hyperbolic tessellation mandalas.

THE DESIGNS

• For "All Together Now" I took a simple leaf pattern where the tips of blade-like leaves touch, tip-to-tip. Where the tips meet a new shape was created by adding two simple lines between the blades...all coming together to create one new pattern.
• While watching an old tv episode of "Monk", I spotted an interesting patten in the lamp in Monk's living room. I pulled out my sketch pad and played with the idea, which ultimately turned into the "Cobblestones" mandala...the pathway.
• Many of the mandalas I create come from my dreams as was the case with "Constellation". When I wake from a dream with a mandala pattern in it, I immediately sketch it so as to remember it. Constellations are a group of stars coming together to form one new pattern.
• Other times, mandala designs come from a doodle or a passing thought. "Crystal Bowl" started out as a simple idea, and when it all came together in multiple patterns it created this crystal bowl-like pattern.
• "Riddle Me This" came to me as a simple idea and yet a bit of a challenge to create. The overlapping lines create an interwoven pattern...similar to a celtic knot.
• While flipping through some tv channels one day, I spotted a scene of an elk with gorgeous antlers roaming though a forest, snow falling. I used the shape of the antlers for the basis of "String of Pearls". I appreciate the serendipity of happening upon that amazing elk.
• A section of the "Sun Dance" mandala came to me as I woke up on the morning of 12/27/2009. I saw the wavy points and proceeded to draw it out. When I finished it, it reminded me of close-up images I've seen of the sun where you can really tell that it's a fiery ball of gas.
• While playing with curvy lines one day, I played with a pattern idea that ended up being the "Tiffani" mandala. It reminded me of a Tiffany lamp shade. I named it with an 'i' at the end because it felt more fun to do so.

THE PROCESS

I create my own mandala designs by first hand sketching them with pencil and paper, then using a graphics tablet and stylus, I draw the mandala into the computer. I then convert the digital images into a PDF coloring book.

MY STORY

I began creating mandalas in early 1999 after a 10-day trip to Egypt. Through much of that region of the world patterns and symbols decorated just about every structure I visited, whether ancient, old or new. My analytical mind loved the geometry of the Islamic art and the Egyptian hieroglyphics. My heart and soul loved their elegant and symbolic beauty.

When I returned home, I began seeing patterns and symbols in everything around me, even in my dreams. I proceeded to translate these intriguing ideas into mandalas. In early 2000 I learned to use meditation as a way to access the depth of these mandalas, fully exploring their therapeutic and metaphysical natures.

After visiting the M.C. Escher exhibit at the Portland (OR) Art Museum, his circle limit series inspired me to create my own series of 'circle limits' mandalas. Technically these designs (and Escher's) are called hyperbolic (curved plane) tessellation (tiling patterns).

By creating the mandalas in this style, it makes the mandalas more three dimensional as if looking at the front half of a ball.
