The Circle (Ken Kolodner)

The Circle explores the aeolian mode to the fullest. The tune is structured with three very distinct parts. The structure of the tune offers a super theory lesson. I discuss the use of a circle of fifths movement in the A part, the use of the relative major in the B part, and a chromatic bass line in the C part. My hope is that learning the backup will help you see the chord progression and how the melody, arrangement, and backup function together. There are a variety of arranging skills to incorporate. The tune and arrangement are moderately challenging. I’ve recorded the tune with fiddler Elke Baker (On A Cold Winter’s Day) and with my son Brad and bassist Alex Lacquement (Stony Run).
