THIS SEASON’S THEME: PRIDE

This June marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots – a pivotal point in the history of the gay liberation movement that sparked a global fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. World Pride will be held in NYC for the entire month of June this year in a momentous celebration of our history. Now there is a lot of buried history and complicated relationships between the LGBTQIA+ community and Pride. With the commercialized and universalized nature of Pride events now, there is a lot to unpack between our history, our future, and now

We donate to SRLP in the spirit of Sylvia Rivera. Rivera, a Latina trans woman, was part of the gay liberation movement, a trans right activist, co-founded of what is now known as The Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R) with Marsha P. Johnson, and is an oft overlooked integral woman in LGBT history. “The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.” SRLP offers legal services to trans, queer, nb, and GNC low income persons of color. They also host trainings, campaigns, and other services to continually fight for a social justice that intertwines gender, social, racial, and economic justice. In a time when trans persons civil rights are being so often attacked and violated it is important to support organizations that work tirelessly to protect those most vulnerable to oppression in our community.
