The Sailor's Hornpipe is a traditional tune, first published as the "College Hornpipe" in 1797 or 1798 by J. Dale (London). The comical nature of the music mixed well with the appearances of the tune in popular culture: Groucho Marx used the tune as well as Warner Bros. with Sylvester the Cat and Walt Disney with Donald Duck. Even the popular cartoon Popeye began using the tune in the opening credits from the 1930s. The Sailor's Hornpipe has become relatively ubiquitous, and that makes this arrangement all the better for learning! Put this in your repertoire and you'll have the entire audience whistling along: guaranteed! This piano arrangement is prepared for intermediate level pianists and above.
