Eddie's Reel (from Eddie LaPlante via Louis Boudreault, Quebec)

Eddie’s Reel is a standard in the Quebecois and New England songbook and among contra dance musicians. It is not entirely clear whether Eddie LaPlante wrote the tune but at minimum, he was the source for Vermont-based fiddler Louis Boudreault who was one of the most influential Quebecois-style fiddlers. I recorded this as a solo on Journey to the Heartland (2005) with a million and one variations and at an insane tempo. I was a lot younger back then! The tune is a great vehicle for seeing chords in the melody and for creating variations. In these video lessons, I explore a bunch! But first, we work through the hammering, a super fun backup that includes harmony and other ideas. We will not go at that crazy tempo that I took 18 years ago, but you will learn a bunch of those ideas!
