We live in paradoxical tension between our individual and social natures. Humans need to connect with each other; and yet every connection carries the risk of injury to, or annihilation of the self. Honoring the self while forming social bonds requires a dynamic balance between the extremes of being a disconnected rebel and a disempowered conformist.Patrick will present a conceptual model of factors that inform how we risk making the connections that are so vital to our personal and collective wellness. The model reveals how the obstacles to interpersonal intimacy can be negotiated with heightened awareness.
