WHAT IT IS - IN SHORT

The beauty of Fuji-JPG files is holding many photographers off shooting RAW as these RAW files - once imported into Lightroom - look dull and lack the sharpness and punch of the out-of-camera JPG files. While it is possible to apply camera calibration settings in post, the process is somewhat fiddly and different CMOS sensors require additional, different sharpening settings.

You can do all that by yourself in Lightroom - or use the convenient method of a single mouse-click. For just 4.99 US$ you get a total of 23 Import-Presets for Adobe Lightroom CC, easy to install and to use!

WHAT IT IS - EXTENDED VERSION

I am a full-time working Fujifilm-X-Photographer from Switzerland and I switched from Canon to Fujifilm in summer 2014, and using these cameras completely changed the way I work. Being a Lightroom user since day one I had established a certain workflow and at one point I noticed that the editing process consisted of several basic steps I had to repeat for each and every file. As I shoot RAW most of the time, having to develop my digital negatives was a normal step, but the RAW files never looked like what I could see on the back of my cameras. Luckily, Lightroom provides so called camera profiles which can be loaded and these pretty much bring back the shine of the famed Fujifilm JPG files. But still these RAW files lack the sharpness and punch of the JPGs, so further sharpening in Lightroom is required. Depending on the camera’s X-Trans-Sensor, certain settings appear to work best, and so every time I would edit files I would have to load them into Lightroom, apply the camera profile matching the film simulation I had used when shooting and then manually sharpen each and every file even before I could start editing. What a waste of time, and I suddenly understood why so many chose to stick with the camera provided JPG files. But I didn’t want to give up on RAW.

The solution was to create a set of IMPORT develop presets that can be applied automatically while copying files to the Lightroom catalog. What they do is set a certain camera profile (like Classic Chrome, Velvia and so on) and certain sharpening settings. As a result, RAW files loaded into Lightroom no longer look dull and smudgy but very close to what you would get if you had shot in JPG using a particular film simulation, only that now you can change the film simulation whenever you want in post!
