Experience the joy and well-being of coloring mandalas. This 11" x 8.5" Mandala Coloring Book contains 8 original garden-themed symmetry mandalas by Maureen Frank.

THE DESIGNS:

  • For the "Belles" mandala, I created my own floral design with a luscious topical southern look to them. Each 'bell' comes up out of another.
  • I created the "Calla Lily" mandala as a personalized mandala for my husband. From a distance, the design looks more like a star. When you look more closely, you see the soft gentle calla lilies.
  • The "Fanfare" mandala reminds me of little windmills or pinwheels that people put in their gardens to add flare and/or to chase the gritters away from the garden flowers.
  • Like "Calla Lilly", the "Flare" mandala is a personalized mandala that I created with one of my brothers in mind. The design is based on an existing flower which the name of it escapes me at the moment. When I remember it, I'll update here.
  • The "Nautilus" mandala reminds me of the old-fashioned water wheels that were used to generate power or grind grain.
  • When new fern leaves first burst into life, they start out as spirals, such as represented here in the "Scroll" mandala.
  • "True Warrior" looks like another structure that you could find in a Native American garden. The vertical structures would be made of wood, with some form of cloth or leather stretched over the wood.
  • Normally, "Tulips" have six petals, I decided to embellish it and give it 12 petals. If you ever take the time to look inside a tulip from above, this is what it looks like.

Happy Coloring!

THE PROCESS:

I create my own mandala designs by first hand sketching them with pencil and paper, then using a graphics tablet and stylus, I draw the mandala into the computer. I then convert the drawings into a PDF coloring book.

MY STORY:

I began creating mandalas in early 1999 after a 10-day trip to Egypt. Through much of that region of the world patterns and symbols decorated just about every structure I visited, whether ancient, old or new. My analytical mind loved the geometry of the Islamic art and the Egyptian hieroglyphics. My heart and soul loved their elegant and symbolic beauty.

When I returned home, I began seeing patterns and symbols in everything around me, even in my dreams. I proceeded to translate these intriguing ideas into mandalas. In early 2000 I learned to use meditation as a way to access the depth of these mandalas, fully exploring their therapeutic and metaphysical natures.
