When I started learning Japanese, I soon reached a point where I felt like, "Hey, I get this." There were certainly plenty (read: tons) of kanji I didn't yet know, sure, but I felt like I was grasping the basics of the language. The kana, nouns, adjectives, particles, it all made sense.

"This is a red ball."

"You are my friend."

I was crushing it, I thought. But just as I was starting to feel really, really good about my progress, I realized an Incredibly Important Something was missing from my understanding: verbs.

Most of the resources I was using had sneakily restricted almost all of the example sentences to a few basic forms:

* a set phrase (e.g. "How are you?")

* "A is B."

* "A is not B."

* a sentence using a verb that had been repeated constantly (e.g. "eat", "go"), so as to trick me into thinking I had even the slightest understanding of how verbs worked

And while verbs were eventually introduced in each of these resources (to varying degrees of helpfulness), I felt the entire time as if I had no foundation on which to build my understanding of Japanese verbs. Through my continued study, I eventually came to understand how they work, but I can't look back and point to one resource that made them click for me. What I can do, however, is look back and see lots of patterns that I believe would have been a huge help to me, if only someone could have pointed them out to me, clearly and concisely, all those years ago.

That then has become my objective in writing this guide for you, dear reader. I invite you to come along with me, as I attempt to lay the foundation, for you, that I wish I could have had myself.
