This chapter is based on four maps showing the earliest landowners of Oley Township that are not in the Pennsylvania State Archives. Three of the maps were published in Oley Valley Heritage: The Colonial Years, 1700-1775 by Philip E. Pendleton (Birdsboro, PA: Pennsylvania German Society, 1994).  They are used with permission from the Pennsylvania German Society.  The maps show the 1725, 1750, and 1775 outlines of each tract and the owners at that time. The fourth map is a 1740 survey map that accompanied a petition by township residents to create Oley Township; it is located in the Philadelphia City Archives.  This author conducted original research to identify resident families on the 1725 and 1740 maps, including those who signed the 1740 petition. Using the survey book information, you can see the original surveys online. Once the land was transferred from the government to private individuals, all subsequent sales were recorded in the Berks County Courthouse.

Pendleton's Oley Valley Heritage is a source that should not be missed for more detailed information on these families and their way of life.
