"Runt of the Litter" features all three principle King Kong's on one page! 1933 and 2005 Kong are very disappointed in 1976 Kong (and he knows it).

This process video describes an efficient method I like to use when painting traditional-style pieces. It leverages the strengths of a digital workflow and the merits of working traditionally (a.k.a. finalizing a painting on just one layer):

  • STEP 1: Create pencil linework
  • STEP 2: Paint foundation values and colors underneath linework
  • STEP 3: Flatten linework and foundation painting, then finish painting on a single layer

It starts from a blank canvas and takes you from pencils all the way through to final painting. I talk about how to use reference photos effectively and will also show you some awesome, time-saving shortcut settings I like to use when working with source material. As always, my focus is on getting work out the door on a production schedule.

You’ll learn:

  • How to use source material responsibly
  • How to use Auto Action to show and hide source material
  • How to use Sub View for reference
  • Principles in laying foundation colors and values under linework
  • How to apply a dry brush effect
  • How to create a cat's tongue brush
  • The difference between editing masks in Clip Studio and Photoshop
  • How to use Mesh Transformation to correct mistakes

The painting is created in Clip Studio, but the principles apply to Photoshop as well. And if you are a professional artist and haven't tried Clip Studio yet... give it a try!

“OVER THE SHOULDER” SERIES

"Runt of the Litter" introduces a new kind of process video I’m calling the “Over the Shoulder" series.

Throughout the years, some of my most meaningful growth as an artist has been when I’ve had the opportunity to just sit next to a mentor and watch him or her work for a couple of hours. Not only did I learn valuable techniques, but I was both inspired (by watching an experienced artist at work) and encouraged by seeing them successfully work through challenges and mistakes.

To that end, this series features art being done in real-time. The entire piece took me about 7 hours to complete, but I’ve condensed all the most important training segments into one hour ("Production Painting: Runt of the Litter"). I’ve chapter marked the sped up sections where there is no foundation instruction as “Over The Shoulder” segments  which you can download as separate files ("Runt of the Litter - OTS 1",  "Runt of the Litter -  OTS 2", ...), and watch in real time if you’re so inclined. I also speak through these OTS segments and talk about what's going through my mind while making painting decisions, so if you want to work while I drone away in the background or are interested in seeing certain parts of the illustration at regular pace, then you might find them helpful. (Forgive my monster voice about halfway through... I got a killer cold!)

I hope you enjoy these episodes, and as always...however you’re creating art, learn from as many qualified people as you can, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and have fun!
