In this video I explain the main concepts needed to manage black and white digital drawings.

These concepts are very important even for color work, when your images start in black and white. If you are an artist that draws with traditional pencil or ink on paper and then continues the colors digitally, you'll find a lot of information.

I'll give you my advices on what are the best practices for digital art, according to my experience and knowledge. I cover the common problems that you can have when dealing with black and white drawings.

For explanations and examples I use Photoshop, but these are basic concepts that are at the root of any digital art software.

The concepts covered are the following:

  • Understanding the two black and white image modes (bitmap and grayscale);
  • Differences and pro and cons between them;
  • Converting gray -> bitmap: "automatically ink" a pencil drawing;
  • Converting bitmap-> gray: shading an ink drawing without losing line detail;
  • Converting gray -> bitmap: applying a "manga" screentone effect;
