Olivier Messiaen was a 20th century French composer who compiled a set of scales and published them in his book,

Instead of being based in traditional functional harmony, these Modes of limited transposition are derived from repeated patterns and symmetry. I recommend exploring them graphically at messiaen.jacksonhardaker.com. Melodies, chords and progressions can be created using the scales, and experimenting with them can lead to interesting note choices that might not be at hand in a diatonic or 'functional harmony' mindset.

The .adg MIDI Device is compatible with Ableton Live 9 and 10 (all versions). The .mid files contain the notes and transpositions of each mode between C3 and C4 – you can open and experiment with these files in the vast majority of music editing software.
