Missouri (Mike Dappert, U.S.)

Missouri is widely played in dulcimer circles. HD players often want to know what am I able to do in a fast fiddle tune? Well here are a bunch of answers! The simplicity of this tune gives us an excellent opportunity to explore the theory of the aeolian mode, a variety of backup “vamps” using chord substitutions and bass lines and lots of variations. The tune is in Em, the relative minor to G, and more specifically in the aeolian mode. Interestingly, the tune seems to behave as it is in Dorian. We explore the natural bass line in a tune that has only two chords: Em and D. From there, I present chord substitutions that further exploit bass lines. Recorded on SunRise (2011) with Mark Grobner and Ken Kolodner.
