This template makes it easier to make good German Anki cards that will actually help you learn. It does this by automating things like making cloze-deletions and color-coding cards based on noun gender and verb irregularity.

The template makes 3 cards: English to German, German to English, and, if you provide an example sentence, a cloze deletion.

Read more on the blog post introducing this template.

Free, forever. Pay what you want if you like, otherwise just enjoy.

Features

  • Nouns automatically color-coded by gender (or plural-only)
  • Irregular verb forms automatically highlighted
  • Cloze deletions* automatically generated based on example sentences. No need for extra note types
  • Intuitive field order mirrors the way words usually appear in vocabulary lists
  • Support for images and audio (both for the German word and example sentence) built in, but cards work fine without
  • Change color-coding easily using Anki's css window in the card editor
  • Field for register/usage notes

*Cloze deletions are not true Anki cloze deletions, but rather "pseudo cloze" cards that look exactly like a real cloze deletion but can be generated from a basic card format.

How-to

See the original blog post. The field names are mostly self-explanatory. However, there are some important rules to follow for the "German" and "Info" fields, which contain information that enables the auto-cloze and color-code functionality.

There are example cards in the deck demonstrating how to use each field.

German

  • Nouns: provide with definite article (der, die, or das). Examples: "die Maus" or "der Hund"
  • Verbs: provide in the infinitive form
  • Adjectives: provide in the base form (no endings)

Info (used for noun plurals and verb conjugations)

  • Nouns: provide either the plural lead by "die" i.e. "die Hunde" OR, for plural-only nouns, write one of "p", "plural", "plural only" or "plural-only"
  • Verbs: provide the 3rd person present, preterite, and past perfect with a comma and space separating the values. Works for separable and reflexive verbs. Examples: "sieht, sah, hat gesehen"  "bewegt sich, bewegte sich, hat sich bewegt"
