Alaska's Secret Door

Through the eyes of five-year old Clint Ferguson, sweeps the reader through the Ferguson family canoe into the Athabascan culture of the Yukon River. Leaving the road system behind, the Fergusons pass through a seemingly invisible door and discover the sweeping river highway, the artery into the heart of Alaska. At Ruby, the Fergusons meet Mary and Paul Peters and their son Emmitt Peters, winner and record-setter of the 1975 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Through the Peters family, Alaska’s Secret Door is a portrayal of fish camp, smoked moose hides, Native ice cream, wind, sand and salmon. From paddlewheels to a kazhem at Shageluk, is a window into the fantastic plethora of the Great Land. Nonfiction and presenting Alaska’s elders, Claude Demientieff and the Peters family, is a collection of outstanding original paintings. Athabascan, Yup’ik cultures, the fish wheel and Russian America are presented in the glossary. Photos of Emmitt Peters and his lead dog as well as the Ferguson family are included along with maps from the Canadian border to the Bering Sea.
