SOFT SEQUENCE, titles for (im)possible artworks

I’ve been fascinated by the titles given to artworks and exhibitions for a long time, the more outlandish the better. It’s almost like a ‘2 - for the price of - 1’ situation where you get a tiny ‘poem’ as well as an art object.

I find that titles can add an extra conceptual layer to art. As an artist interested in what language can do, naming work is an important aspect in the process of making work, it’s very often an act of completion.

Titles ‘mill around’ in my notebooks, prefaced by a small ‘t’ so they’re easy to spot when I need them. Some years ago I even started to consider whether I couldn’t just do away with making physical art objects all together (or at least as much as possible) and elevate the titles, that I would have given these objects, as art.

The physical art object would be able to remain in the shadows, perhaps indefinitely. And if its existence were an impossibility, it wouldn’t matter because a title would take its place as artwork.

Soft Sequence, is a digital artist publication containing 48 titles gleaned from my notebooks. In keeping with some of the ideas surrounding the work, the viewer can choose to bring the publication into physical existence by printing it or have it remain a physical , indefinitely.
