Sunday River Waltz (Pete Sutherland, U.S.)

$38

The late Pete Sutherland was a pivotal figure in the traditional folk music scene. You may not know his name, but you might know some of the tunes that he discovered and brought to so many (such as Coleman’s March and Shenandoah Falls). Pete was perhaps best known for his fiddling, but his mentoring and musicianship were equally influential. My connection to Pete goes back 40 years—when he was a member of the highly influential band Metamora with Grey Larsen and hammered dulcimer player Malcolm Dalglish. Metamora’s technical proficiency, tight arranging, and adventurous interpretations of traditional music influenced countless musicians (including me).

Sunday River Waltz is Pete’s best-known composition. In this video lesson, we go over the rationale of the chord progression along with the function of each chord. We use major and minor chords, minor 7ths, suspensions, dominant 7ths, and secondary dominants. We work through the hammering for the melody, a basic arrangement, an accompaniment, an intro-outro, and a more ambitious arrangement, using a variety of arranging tools. This is a beautiful tune well worth the effort!
