Swinging with the Eighties (Graham Townsend, Canada)

(Key of G - originally in F)

This is such a super cool tune written by one of the best-known Canadian fiddlers, the late Graham Townsend. And, even better, what an amazing theory lesson featuring the circle of fifths chord movement; secondary dominants; diminished 7th chords; the parallel minor-major; chromatics; and more. It is a great intro into playing a swing tune! This is a fantastic tune to drive home the lesson to see the chord progression in the melody – and to think chords, always!! There is so much here: melody using left-hand lead, swing rhythm, accent shifts, lots of backup ideas, an intro-outro, lots of variations/arranging ideas. Mary Lynn Michal and Ken Kolodner’s Out From The Shadows will have this piece on the new CD to be released in Fall 2022. My version of the piece comes from this performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnDigC20Y2U
