The Method: Constantin Stanislavsky & How Actors Learn to Act

Constantin Stanislavsky (1863-1938), a famed Russian actor, director, and teacher, profoundly influenced the theater of the 20th century and beyond. He developed a variety techniques that became known as "The Stanislavsky System" or "the Method" which allowed actors to portray characters in a very like life and believeable way. His work was later adapted by leading acting coaches including Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen. Elements of The Method have played a role in award winning work from almost every leading actor in Hollywood.

In this introduction to The Method:

• You'll get a sense of why it has had such a tremendous impact on drama and in fact on storytelling, writing, and screenwriting as well.

• You'll learn how the Method opens up the unconscious mind to help create better characters and better performances.

• You will also come to understand why some people have called the Method dangerous or psychologically destabalizing.

• You will get links to videos, articles and other resources that help you learn the difference between Stansilavski's method and related methods taught by Adler, Meisner, and Strasberg.

It is an understatement to say that the Method, in all its incarnations, merely allows actors to play characters a writer puts in his screenplay.

It's more true to say that the Method allows actors to truly create never before seen people using "clues" hidden in a script. The actor brings information and characteristics (taken from life) that were never in the original script.

The Method seeks to give actors a conscious means to reach their unconscious mind so it can present the living, breathing, embodiment of an imaginary character on the stage.
