kenkolodnerDating back to the 1700’s, this lovely piece offers us a treasure of concepts to explore. The overall theme is that when we learn a melody, always focus on the chord progression. (1) The hand separation is a challenging but rewarding. (2) How to incorporate and recognize into our chord progression the concepts of major and the relative minor, “lift”, and using the circle of fifths with major & minor chords. (3) Multiple techniques in our arrangements such as arpeggio fills, melodic runs, two & three note chords, valley rolls and other arranging ideas; (5) Developing a full arrangement with multiple approaches including an intro/outro based on a piece of the chord progression, a backup, a hand separation version, and two additional arrangements including an example of an “improvised” break.
