How could an entire nation be hoodwinked to believe a political lie? If it was done once in history, it could be done again and again…even until today! Has it happened to the Native American?

Joseph Goebbles attended the established Heidelberg University where he was awarded a doctorate of philosophy in 1920. He had not served in the German Army during the First World War as he was disabled by a clubbed foot, which hindered his ability to walk.

This feeling of physical inferiority (Goebbels was self-conscious about his lack of height as well), his rejection by the German Army and the terms of the Treaty of Versailles lead to Goebbels becoming a very embittered man in the early 1920’s. He joined the Nazi Party towards the end of 1924.

He was soon after, appointed Gauleiter of Berlin and in this role, he put his propaganda skills to full use. After the Nazis seized power in 1933, he was appointed propaganda minister. One of his first acts was to order the burning of books by Jewish or anti-Nazi authors at the Bebelplatz and he proceeded to gain full control of every outlet of information in Germany.

So Goebbels was appointed propaganda minister. The definition of the word, propaganda:

chiefly derogatory information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view

So Hitler and Goebbels used political “propaganda” as a tool to mislead the German people with biased information to get them to believe things that were untrue so he could attain, and retain his power over the psyche of his people.

Goebbels is quoted as saying:

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.
