This music was John Oliver's contribution to a semi-theatrical production by the short-lived Big World Band (Vancouver) of a story "The Parrot and the Merchant" by Rumi. The arrangement you hear in this demo video retains the original clarinet, shaker, and guitar parts, adding a string quintet in place of the remaining original instrumentation.

Oliver contributed the "Travel Music" for the original production. The Merchant travels from Iran to the Indian jungle on business. His parrot requests that he communicates the story of his parrot's life in captivity in Tehran to the parrots of the jungle. Since the journey takes the Merchant away from home and back again, it seemed an appropriate musical form to extract from the complete piece, which was a collection of music composed by various band members in 2014 when it was written.

This work is dedicated to François Houle in friendship.
