Gospel blues guitar in the style of Gary Davis and others offers another way to pick while also delivering a message, in this case, a religious one.
Gospel blues chord patterns tend to be a little unusual, often including chords that shouldn't logically appear in the standard chord progression, mostly being used to bridge chords and make the music more dynamic and interesting for the listener.
While I do use some bridging chords in this way, the overall structure and picking pattern of Can't Cross Here is very simple - it's based on the chords of A, E(7) and D7, and uses a call/response idea, where the vice express a line of lyrics and the the guitar answers with a simple riff.
